Homelessness is becoming an increasing problem globally and poverty is the silent force pushing families to the brink of it. The world is still suffering the impacts of the global pandemic of COVID-19 on the global economy with a resultant slow recovery process. According to the first-ever UN conference on Homelessness, On 19th February, the gavel fell on the 58th session of the UN Commission for Social Development, which agreed to the text of the historical first United Nations resolution on homelessness.
Globally, 1.6 billion people worldwide live in inadequate housing conditions, with about 15 million forcefully evicted every year, according to UN-Habitat, which has noted an alarming rise in homelessness in the last 10 years. Young people are the age group with the highest risk of becoming homeless.
Imagine living on the edge, where a single twist of fate like war, an unexpected illness, or a missed pay check could shatter stability. In the heart of bustling cities, innocent children bear the heavy burden, with almost half living below the poverty line. To this end, GCVSI ameliorates these factors through the following services;
GCVSI Food and Non-Food Distribution Program
GCVSI is actively engaged in addressing the immediate needs of homeless individuals and refugees through our comprehensive food and non-food distribution services. We ensure the provision of essential supplies, including nutritionally balanced food items, clothing, hygiene products, and other necessities. This service is designed to alleviate the immediate challenges faced by those in crisis, promoting their well-being and dignity. Raw and fresh food items like vegetables, tomatoes, fish, meats packets of rice, noodles, canned foods, canned beans and snacks are equally distributed to new arrived refugees to support their families to promote and facilitate their integration into their host communities.
Mental and Psychosocial Support Services
Recognizing the emotional toll of homelessness and displacement, GCVSI prioritizes mental and psychosocial support services. Our dedicated professionals offer counselling and therapeutic interventions to help individuals cope with trauma, anxiety, and the stress associated with homelessness. By fostering emotional resilience, we contribute to the holistic well-being of those affected, empowering them to regain a sense of stability and self-worth.
Performing Image Restoration Services
GCVSI understands the importance of personal dignity and self-esteem in the face of homelessness or displacement. Through image restoration services such as hair grooming, we aim to restore a sense of normalcy and dignity to individuals in crisis. This seemingly small gesture goes a long way in boosting self-confidence and contributes to the overall mental and emotional recovery of those we serve.
Connection to Approved Shelters
GCVSI is committed to ensuring safe and secure housing for homeless individuals and refugees. Through our extensive network, we facilitate connections to approved shelters that provide not only a roof over their heads but also access to essential services. Our goal is to transition individuals from the streets to a supportive living environment, fostering stability and paving the way for a path towards long-term recovery.
Provide Job Search Services
GCVSI recognizes the significance of sustainable livelihoods in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Our job search services are designed to empower individuals by assisting them in securing employment opportunities. Through partnerships with local businesses and vocational training programs, we aim to equip those we serve with the skills and resources needed to regain financial independence and rebuild their lives. We also help with job interview preparation, and CV construction for them.
