Intergenerational Program
In a world where time threatens to erase the echoes of our cultural past, the GCVSI Intergenerational Program has arisen as a force that defies the generational abyss.
This program focuses on cultural preservation by uniting communities, fostering awareness, and developing traditional skills while integrating modern techniques. Through mentorship, economic empowerment, and technology integration, the program aims to bridge generational divides, empowering artisans, and older women. Monitoring impact and ensuring sustainability through funding strategies further solidify the program’s mission of preserving heritage and fostering a sustainable cultural legacy.
GCVSI does this by:
- Dialogue as a Gateway to Learning:
GCVSI provides a unique avenue for the younger generation to glean insights and lessons from the wealth of experience held by their older counterparts. Our platform fosters open dialogue, creating a space where both generations can exchange ideas, share perspectives, and express themselves freely. This dynamic exchange becomes a two-way street of learning, enriching the lives of both the seasoned and the budding minds.
- Fostering Peace through Cultural Heritage:
Through intentional dialogue, GCVSI contributes to the fostering of peace within communities. This dialogue extends beyond individual stories; it becomes a conduit for the transmission of cultural heritage. As experiences and information flow from the older generation to the younger, a tapestry of traditions, values, and histories is sustained. In this shared understanding, a harmonious coexistence is nurtured, promoting unity and respect.
- Promotion of Cultural Arts and Crafts:
GCVSI recognizes the invaluable role of crafts and arts in preserving cultural identity. Our initiative brings forth older craftsmen, masters of their trade, to exhibit their works. This not only showcases the beauty of cultural arts but also serves as an interactive learning experience for the younger generation. By fostering an appreciation for traditional crafts, we ensure the continuity of artistic heritage and craftsmanship.
For instance, a GCVSI team visited 90-year-old Mrs. Sarah Elisha at the Usafa Pottery Center in Abuja, discovering a captivating tale of cultural preservation. Mrs. Elisha, a revered artisan, welcomed them into her clay-filled workshop with a warm smile that reflected decades of dedication to pottery-making. Her weathered hands, adorned with creation marks, spoke of her commitment to preserving cultural heritage
In recognition of her invaluable contributions, GCVSI presented Mrs Elisha with a well-deserved recognition award, acknowledging her pivotal role in imparting her skills and preserving cultural history. Beyond her own hands, her story extended to her children and grandchildren, highlighting the intergenerational transmission of pottery-making expertise at the Usafa Pottery Center. The narrative emphasized the importance of supporting artisans like Mrs Elisha to empower them, honour their legacy, and ensure the continued transmission of cultural craftsmanship.
- Educational Workshops on Cultural Sensitivity:
GCVSI actively engages both generations in educational workshops aimed at promoting cultural sensitivity. By fostering understanding and appreciation for diverse perspectives, we create a foundation for unity within communities. These workshops serve as a bridge, connecting different age groups through shared values and respect for cultural nuances.
In essence, the GCVSI Intergenerational Service transcends the boundaries of age, fostering an environment where the echoes of the past resonate with the dreams of the future. It’s a celebration of shared wisdom, a commitment to breaking down barriers, and a journey towards a harmonious, culturally rich society.
